Hayden Panettiere Loves White Space

Monday, August 18th, 2008

I’ve yet to see an episode of Heroes, but this minimalist photoshoot of actress Hayden Panettiere caught my eye. I love editorial design and most of the time I’ll look through fashion rags more for the glossy adverts and featured photoshoots than the articles themselves. Ad campaigns for the fashion industry tend to be done with a remarkably high level of polish and artistic quality, and it’s that level of quality I strive for in my own work.

From an aesthetic and design perspective, this photoshoot is a great example of simple, uncluttered design. The white-on-white adds a subtle, classical touch and makes for a beautiful contrast against the warm tan of her skin. This brings a design mantra to mind: You know it’s done not when you can’t add anything more, but when you can’t take anything else away.

A Political Statement Powered by Typography

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

“Tell the Truth” — a rap collaboration by Mos Def, Immortal Technique, and Eminem — is a passionate political statement slamming the Bush administration’s actions regarding 9/11 and his War of Terrorism. Watch with caution if you’re at work, or at least put the headphones on so you don’t get in trouble.

When good art direction is in bad taste

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Watch this:

The spot is very well executed, from an artistic and technical point-of-view. But from a moral viewpoint, I find it pretty reprehensible that a photo printing company would be as exploitive as to take advantage of the real pain that does go on in the world merely to sell some photo prints.

The Nature Conservancy Campaign

These micro-ads measure approximately 1.25″ x 1″ (in.) and were deliberately placed in two-page magazine spreads to magnify their impact. As an added benefit of their small size, the micro-ads also proved to be easy on the budget.
